The Practice

The Three Swans Surgery is a friendly five doctor (three male and two female) partnership, a modern, purpose built city centre building and a dedicated staff and primary health care team. Regular 'team' meetings and a non-autocratic style result in happiness most of the time, efficiency some of the time but quality of course all of the time!

We are a Research and Development practice which means we take a forward role in primary health care research and are open to new and better ways of doing things. As well as training GP registrars we are also involved in undergraduate training. We believe we provide high quality health care and are preparing at present for the Royal College of General Practitioners Quality Practice Award. We also enjoy ourselves a bit.

The team

Dr Elizabeth Stanger Is the senior partner. Her special interests include women's health and occupational health.

Dr Michael Moore Is the lead partner for Research and Development and special interests include diabetes and hypertension.

Dr Hugh Bond Provides child health surveillance for the practice, puts acupuncture needles in patients and as a Primary Care Group member has the important role of Clinical Governance.

Dr Richard Barnsley I am the GP trainer though all the doctors are interested in teaching and have an active role. I am also interested in minor surgery, computerisation in the practice and am the odd-job man!

Dr Helena McKeown Is involved in the undergraduate teaching, is a Local Medical Committee member and also has a special interest in women's health.

The Training

Registrars have their own fully equipped consulting room which is computerised and all set up for consultations on video (don't panic!).

The timetable is not onerous and there are two hour long sessions of protected time for teaching. There is a half day off each week and Wednesdays are spent at the all-day Release Scheme.

Patient appointments are 10 minutes (longer to start with) and there is always someone available (if the computer is being awkward etc). Surgeries are usually 8.30 - 12.00 with a half-hour break and 4.00 - 6.00 in the afternoon. There is joint on-call with the local GP co-operative with a 'shifts' system which works out at approximately two nights per month and a week-end shift every two months. Teaching is relaxed and non-formal but hard work and I hope fun.
