GP Training in Salisbury

Salisbury Vocational training scheme

If you come to Salisbury as part of the Vocational Training Scheme, based on Salisbury District Hospital, you will find a scheme that allows you to shape your hospital jobs and gives you the opportunity to find a practice that suits you, for your GP registrar year.

We encourage you settle on a practice in your first three months on the scheme. This allows you to gain from guidance from your trainer through your hospital jobs, and we hope that it gives you more of a sense of direction. It is our intention that you be offered a week of study leave at the practice of your choice during your second three months.

It is hoped that most trainees will complete the audit, that is required for summative assessment, while still in their hospital posts. This is, of course another area where the ongoing support of the trainer is of benefit.

Doing your own "scheme"?

Many registrars come from elsewhere, and find that they are welcomed with open arms by the Salisbury medical profession. All the registrars are members of Salisbury Medical Society, which is based at Salisbury District Hospital.

There a regular lunch time meetings for GPs, and regular and stimulating evening meetings that are well attended by a broad cross-section of doctors. There are also meetings and social events which are held with local vets and lawyers.

The weekly day-release course in Winchester is a chance to meet with other registrars from Salisbury and other nearby areas. The course is well-structured and democratic, and seems to be enjoyed by all participants.

The Wessex Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners

The Wessex Faculty is one of the largest and most active faculties of the RCGP, and this is reflected in the meetings and courses provided by the Faculty.

The faculty are keen to help and offer advice to registrars as well as to hear your views. Do contact the Faculty Administrator, Frances Cloyne <wessex@rcgp.org.uk> for more information on Membership or associate Membership of the College, and activities and courses.
