The Sixpenny Handley and Chalke Valley Practice

A more rural practice would be difficult to find in Southern England. We cover an area of 200 square miles of beautiful countryside in Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire. We have two urpose-built surgeries, 6½ miles apart from which we provide a full complement of clinics and services and dispense medications for our 4500 patients. We are fully computerised and connected to the hospital for laboratory links. Hugh Pelly also offers acupuncture.

Out of hours cover is provided by Urgent Care Service based in St Leonards Bournemouth. We expect our registrars to broaden their experience of our of hours work as directed by the Deanery, fully supported of course. We are part of the Dorset Primary Care Trust. in 2000 we became the first practice in the Wessex region to be awarded the RCGP Quality Practice Award. In September 2005 we were reaccredited for this.

We have a long tradition of teaching medical students and became a training practice in 1996. There is a room set aside for the registrar with a video camera etc. A half day is allocated each week for planned personal development in addition to the Wessex Day Release Scheme. GPRs are encouraged to sit in with hospital consultants in specialities in which they feel less confident. Elizabeth Nodder and Mark Morgan share responsibility for the teaching. The registrar is actively encouraged to come to all our Practice meetings and to become a full and valued member of our Primary Health Care Team. We have had several GP returners in the practice. Prospective registrars are encouraged to come and spend some time in the Practice to see how we work.
