Endless Street Surgery

We offer the registrar excellent facilities, a friendly supportive working environment and the opportunity to manage their own time to balance work commitment and learning time to suit their personal needs. We expect the registrar to be committed, to care about their work, to respect patients and colleagues and to enjoy learning their chosen craft as part of our practice team.

We are 3 full time and 3 part time partners and 1 nurse partner with 8800 patients, we also employ a flexible career scheme doctor and a salaried GP. Our main surgery premises are in a Georgian town house in Endless Street close to the centre of Salisbury, we also have a branch surgery in the village of Winterslow some 8 miles NE of the city. The main surgery has been modernised and extended in recent years to provide 7 consulting rooms and a well equipped treatment room as well as accommodation for the Practice Nurses, the Community Nurses and the Health Visitors. There are dedicated consulting rooms with PCs for each of our registrars.

The surgery is fully computerised and the practice is paperless. We are a Dispensing Practice for about a quarter of our total patient list who live in the outlying villages. Two partners regularly undertake sessions at the local OOHS.

The practice was accredited for training over 10 years ago with Dr Elcock and we have had continuous registrars in post since then. All our previous registrars have completed their training and have also been successful in the MRCGP examination. Two of our previous registrars have subsequently joined the partnership, and another has returned as a salaried GP. We currently offer 2 registrar posts, one of which is usually a part time post.

We have found part-time training over an extended period to be a very satisfactory alternative arrangement to the conventional intensive 12 month training.

Judy Walters and Jane Bowden are the accredited trainers. All the partners, other members of the clinical team and Gill Ibberson, our practice manager, take an active part in training particularly in those areas where they have a special interest, eg Diabetes, Dermatology, Asthma, Joint Injection, Minor Surgery, coil and Implanon insertion. The registrar is also encouraged to attend partnership meetings on a regular basis to gain first hand experience of practice and partnership management issues. The Practice is also actively involved in Medical Student Teaching at all levels and has a dedicated teaching suite where seminars are held for 2nd and Final year medical students.

The partners share the view that enjoyment of our professional work and the provision of adequate time for family and social life are more important than maximising earnings from the partnership, the full time partners each have 2 half days per week. We extend this attitude to our registrars working time and offer a half day each week in addition to time out of the practice for the Day Release Scheme in accordance with Deanery Guidelines on the working week. We encourage the registrar to take responsibility for arranging their own consulting hours and times appropriate to their needs but expect them to show the commitment necessary to develop their consulting skills so that in their final months they are able to manage a workload similar to that of the partners.

The registrar is also expected to take an equal share of the on-call commitment with appropriate support & supervision.
